Rules and closures
Land manager: Municipality of Anchorage, BLM Campbell Tract and Alaska State Parks (Anchorage Parks & Rec: Service High / Hillside singletrack).
- Chugach State Park: bikes are allowed only on listed trails (11 AAC 20.050). On the Hillside those are Gasline, Powerline, Powerline Access, Wolverine Bowl, the Middle Fork Loop segment, South Fork Rim, Silver Fern, White Spruce, Llama, Hemlock Burn and Shebanof. Citations are issued.
- BLM Campbell Tract: stay off trails that are dog-mushing only when there's snow.
- Muni trails: yield to hikers and uphill riders, and stay off when muddy.
Season and winter fat biking
Summer, plus winter fat biking on BLM-allowed trails.
BLM allows winter fat biking on Campbell Tract, and it grooms trails for classic and skate skiing. Its winter-only singletrack needs frozen ground and about 6 in of snow. In Chugach State Park, fat bikes (3.7 in+ tires, under 20 psi) can also use Middle Fork Loop from Nov 15 to Mar 31.
Winter riding near avalanche terrain: check our avalanche conditions page first.
Bears
BLM lists black and brown bears and moose on Campbell Tract and asks visitors to travel in groups, make noise and carry bear spray. Singletracks notes a trail along Campbell Creek that officials close seasonally after bear encounters. Obey posted closures.
